Event Details

Urban City Limits (FB Event)

Urban City Limits will be Urban Axes Austin's final major tournament and will be a three day event hosted from Friday, April 4th, to Sunday, April 6th. Here's a run-down of the events and their formats so you know what to expect in Austin!

Friday: Practice Hours + Skills

Practice Hours

April 4th, Daytime

We will have Practice Hours open on Friday afternoon before our Keep Axes Weird Skills event that evening. Online registration will be available and will be announced prior to the tournament. Come in early, hang out with other throwers, and get yourself warmed up for the weekend!

Keep Axes Weird

April 4th, Evening

Keep Axes Weird will be our Friday night Skills competition featuring Beer-lympics inspired games that combine axe throwing with classic party games such as Flip Cup, Beer Pong, & more! Teams of 4 will take part in multiple events throughout the evening in their quest to become Keep Axes Weird champions. Games will include:

  • Flip Cup Around the World: 3 team members flip their cups one after another, with each successful pass earning one Around the World throw for their 4th member. Team members will rotate flipping cups and throwing until Around the World has been completed, with each team racing to record the fastest time.

  • Axe Pong: Teams divide into pairs of two, with each pair competing against a duo from another team. One team member will attempt to throw a ping pong ball into the opposing team’s cups, while their partner will throw their axe at a matching target. Each cup they successfully hit is taken out of play, and partners will swap axe throwing and beer pong roles each turn. The team that clears all their opponents' cups first wins.

  • More games to come!

In keeping with Keep Axes Weird’s Beer-lympics theme, drinking will be allowed, but drinking will not be required to participate! Throwers of all axe throwing (and party game!) ability levels are encouraged to participate in what’s sure to be one of our most fun and unique Skills events we’ve ever hosted. The top teams will face off at the end of the night in our Keep Axes Weird finals and win some fabulous themed prizes!

Tickets go on sale next Thursday, 3/13 at 6:00 PM EDT on our event webpage! Players will register as individuals, but please include the names of your team members and your team name when registering!

Saturday: Swiss Tournaments

Tiered Swiss Tournaments

April 5th, Daytime

Urban City Limits' Tiered Swiss Tournaments will be played on Saturday and will feature the Urban Swiss + Single Elimination format we've incorporated into many of our tournaments. Urban Swiss tournaments guarantee a minimum number of Round Robin matches for all players before any elimination occurs, providing better value by giving more matches to everyone that enters. They also create separate tournament fields for throwers of different Skill levels, making them ideal for beginner and intermediate throwers.

Tournament Tiers

All throwers competing in Urban City Limits' Tiered Swiss Tournaments will buy the same ticket and register for the same event. We will pull the 12-month IATF Premier and Standard averages for all registered throwers and calculate an adjusted Premier average for comparison with Standard averages. Throwers will then be ranked by the higher of their 12-month IATF Standard or Premier averages. For WATL throwers, we will calculate an equivalent IATF average for use in this ranking.

The resulting average ranking will be used to split the players into their respective tiers, and the number of tiers and how many throwers are in each will be determined by the amount of registrations we receive for this event.

We've found our Tiered Tournaments to be some of the most exciting and popular events at our tournaments. We believe they represent one of the best ways to make sure that ALL levels of throwers can experience a competitive tournament environment, and we all love cheering on throwers as they experience the thrill of appearing in their first tournament finals.

Urban Swiss

Urban Swiss is a two stage tournament format comprised of a Round Robin stage and a Single Elimination Bracket.

The Round Robin portion of the Swiss format is non-eliminating, so everyone who enters is guaranteed to play a set minimum number of matches; this number is dependent on registrations, but we aim for a minimum of 4 - 5 matches per player. No more 0-2! The Swiss format is also self-leveling, so opponents in each round will have the same (or a very similar) win/loss record, offering more evenly skilled matches as the Swiss tournament progresses. To learn more, read our blog post explaining the Swiss tournament format and player strategy.

Our Swiss tournaments will be divided into brackets of up to 32 players, which allows us to finish the Round Robin with 1 undefeated competitor from each bracket. Players are then ranked by their 1) Match Wins/Losses, 2) Rounds Won, 3) TB (Tiebreaker), and 4) Rounds Lost, with the top throwers advancing to a Single Elimination bracket. We then play through the Single Elimination bracket until a champion from each tier is crowned!

IATF Rulesets

The ruleset each tournament will be played under will be announced alongside the number of tiers we will be offering, as determined by the amount of registrations we receive for this event. The options include Standard, Premier, and Urban Rules, our scoring system which combines elements of the IATF Premier and Standard rulesets. Click here to view the current Urban Rules.

Sunday: Urban City Limits

Urban City Limits

April 6th, Daytime

The weekend will culminate on Sunday with the Urban City Limits tournament. This event is open registration and will be played as a random-seeded, double elimination tournament. This event will be scored under the updated IATF Premier Rules but is open to throwers of all ability levels.

After Party

April 6th, Evening

We will be hosting an After Party on Sunday evening following the conclusion of Urban City Limits! More details will be announced soon, but stick around to enjoy Austin and celebrate with everyone after the competition is over!
