Urban legends: IATC Shakedown

Join us May 17th for an IATC-prep edition of Urban Legends!

IATC 2024 is just around the corner and we can use all the practice we can get! We've designed this month's Urban Legends to test some of the most important skills you'll need to succeed at IATC. This event is not meant exclusively for IATC throwers though! Everyone is welcome to take part, and for those not travelling to Toronto, it's a great opportunity to get a little taste of IATC close to home. Plus we're offering an unusual tournament format never before thrown at Urban Axes!

Global Showdown Trial

Global Showdown is a Skills competition among teams of throwers from Canada, the USA, Europe, and Australia. It's hosted on Sunday at IATC during Homecoming, but they are holding qualifiers on Friday evening this year where throwers can compete to be part of their regions team. This Skill is designed to give throwers a mini-version of the Global Showdown Qualifiers!

Players will throw a qualifying round of 16 throws: 5 underhand, 5 ambidextrous, and 6 multi-rotation (3 1.5 rotation, and 3 2 spin throws). The top 4 throwers in each Skill will compete in a second skills event to determine the champ for that Skill:

  • Underhand – Vertical Around the World
  • Ambidextrous – Ambidextrous Into the World
  • Multi-Rotation – Multi-Rotation Black Jack

Gretzky Swiss Tournament

A strong Clutch game can be be crucial to winning IATC matches, and we're giving you the opportunity to throw as many Clutches as possible in our Gretzky Swiss tournament! For those unfamiliar, a Gretzy match is one in which each 5-throw game is made up of 4 Clutch attempts and a bullseye attempt on 5th throw. It's the inverse of a normal hatchet round and makes the supernatural perfect game score a 33, and three of those in a row is a 99, the Great One's jersey number.

Players will compete in Swiss rounds throwing Gretzky matches, with Big Axe tiebreakers for each tied round. Each thrower is likely guaranteed at least 4 matches, with a possibility of more depending on sign-ups. After the Swiss rounds are complete, throwers are ranked based on their Win/Loss Record (e.g. 4-1) and additional tiebreakers, with the top throwers advancing to a single-elimination bracket. Click here for more detail about our Swiss tournaments.

We're very excited to try this Gretzky match style and to provide as many Clutch throws as possible to all participants using our Swiss format. Sign up for Urban Legends on May 17th and Clutch to your heart's content!
